"The Alutiiq Superhero" Screens at AIFF Native Voices Showcase
ANCHORAGE, AK: In December 2025, Greatland Studios’ short documentary, The Alutiiq Superhero, screened at the Bear Tooth Theatrepub during the Native Voices Showcase at the Anchorage International Film Festival (AIFF).
This showcase is dedicated to highlighting Indigenous stories and perspectives, and we are honored to contribute a film that celebrates the resilience, artistry, and cultural revitalization of the Alutiiq people. This film was produced in partnership with the Rasmuson Foundation, which honored Jerry with its prestigious 2025 Distinguished Artist Award in recognition of his lasting impact as an artist. During the screening at AIFF, Jerry was also awarded the first ever Native Voices Legends: Culture Bearer award in honors the career achievement of advancing and stewarding Alaska Native culture and traditions.
The Story: Art Rising from Tragedy
The Alutiiq Superhero tells the inspiring story of Jerry Laktonen, a man whose life path was irrevocably altered by one of Alaska’s darkest moments.
For years, Jerry made his living on the water as a commercial fisherman. But when the Exxon Valdez oil spill devastated the coastline and disrupted the local fishing industry, Jerry was forced to find a new career and navigate a new path forward. In the wake of that environmental and economic disaster, he turned to his roots.
The Alutiiq Superhero explores how Jerry:
- Transitioned from the life of a fisherman to becoming a prolific modern Alutiiq carver.
- Mastered traditional techniques that were at risk of fading away.
- Helped a new generation rediscover the beauty and power of a once-lost art form.
Jerry’s journey is a powerful reminder that our greatest contributions often come from our hardest challenges. His story is rooted in resilience, cultural identity, family, and a desire to revitalize traditions that were disrupted and at risk.
Celebrating Alaska’s Treasures
For Greatland Studios and director Brad Hillwig, it was an honor to document Jerry’s incredible story. This story reminds us not only of the lasting impact that a dedicated purpose-driven artist can create, but of the vital importance of telling powerful and hopeful stories that honors the history, diversity, and spirit of Alaska.
